Overview

This java comes from Finca La Llama, a ten-hectare farm nestled in a lush mountain valley at 1,650 MASL, where mineral-rich soils and natural water streams create ideal conditions for coffee. The farm is run by the Rodriguez family — pioneers of Bolivia’s specialty coffee movement. The harvest is small but the attention to detail shows in the cup, with this lot reminding us of cherry, milk chocolate, and raspberry.

The story

The Rodriguez family purchased the farm in 2015, at which point it had already been producing coffee for 15 years. When they first visited the land, a lone llama stood proudly in their path, as if claiming it — so they named the farm in its honour!

The family planted a range of new coffee trees alongside the old ones  — including orange caturra and java — and in 2017 they did the first harvest. The family hire pickers from the neighbouring Villa Rosario community to handpick the coffee during the harvest. As well as demonstrating to local farmers what can be done with modern farming practices, the aim was also to provide a further source of income for families living in the region and to reactivate coffee culture.

Production process

The coffee was processed using the pink honey processing method. The cherries were placed in a steel tank for 24 hours. They were then pulped, leaving the sticky (pinkish-toned) mucilage still partially attached to the seeds, which were then transferred to raised drying beds.  Once the coffee reaches the desired moisture level, it is sent to the Rodriguez’s dry mill for milling and grading, ensuring consistent quality.

Our relationship

This is our second year working with the Rodriguez family, and this pacamara is one of five lots that we purchased. It was harvested between June and September 2024 and landed in the UK in January 2025.

After cupping the coffee with Daniela Rodriguez at their lab in La Paz, we agreed the Free on Board price with the Rodriguez family (that is, the price of the green coffee delivered to the port of Arica in Chile). We paid the Rodriguez family directly for the coffee, with the support of Falcon who helped us ship the coffee to the UK.
