Built in 2017, Shyira Washing Station sits at 2,000 MASL, with neighbouring producers delivering cherries from farms reaching up to 2,400 MASL. Its high altitude, favourable climate, and location in a part of Rwanda with relatively few washing stations make Shiyra a distinctive site, well suited to producing consistently high-quality lots year on year. This coffee is a great example — a sweet, creamy cup, with notes of strawberry gelato and tropical fruits.
We sourced this coffee through Raw Material, who work in partnership with Muraho Trading Co. (MTC), the owners of the washing station. This partnership is focused on increasing the value returned to Rwandan producers through higher payments, access to new markets, knowledge sharing, and investment in local communities — including support such as fertiliser distribution, seedling delivery, and loans to help cover school fees. Shyira Washing Station is exceptionally well located for coffee production: sitting at around 2,000 MASL, it collects coffee grown at some of the highest altitudes in Rwanda that we are aware of. A river running through the base of the station provides reliable access to water for processing.
All cherries are hand-sorted then floated, to remove any underripe or damaged cherries, along with any foreign objects (twigs etc). The whole cherries are then laid out on raised mesh drying beds and dried for approximately 30 days — regularly turned when the sun is high and covered overnight — until they reach the desired moisture content.
This coffee landed in the UK in December 2025. We purchased this coffee through Raw Material, who work with Muharo Trading Company (MTC) and the green coffee importer Algrano to import coffee processed at MTC’s washing stations in three regions in Rwanda.
